Échillais [eʃilɛ] is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente-Maritime (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Échillaisiens. A small residential centre in the suburbs, the commune lies to the south of Rochefort from which it is separated by the river Charente, and it is the third largest town in the unité urbaine de Rochefort.
A little history
Situated on the plateau, it was populated in prehistoric times (Dolmens de la Sauzaie, Neolithic site of Bois Bernard), then during the Gallo-Roman period (at Erronnelles).
