Dourges is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Dourgeois. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération Hénin-Carvin.
A little history
According to data available in palaeoecology and palaeolandscape, notably derived from research in preventive archaeology, the "marais de Dourges" in the bottom of the valley of the Deûle, in the mining basin of Lens, at the foot of the chalky slope of the Gohelle, was once a lake (during the Bølling, cf. fossil traces of fish and molluscs). Gradually dried out and filled in during the Older Dryas then periodically flooded by brief floods, the area became marshy again during the Allerød, after which a new drying out allowed the appearance of humus-rich soils. A cooling during the Younger Dryas destabilised the catchment area and resulted in a "filling of the depression by silty colluvium".
