A little history
The site has been occupied since the Palaeolithic, but one must wait until the Neolithic to find traces of an active settlement. Many megalithic sites are recorded on the territory of Donges. Besides the menhir de la Vacherie, listed as a monument historique and today standing in the middle of the oil refinery, there survive the menhir de Condé ("la dent de Gargantua"), the Christianised menhir de la Garenne ("la pierre qui sonne") and the remains of an ancient allée couverte near la Guesne, on the île de Revin. Lead extraction is attested in the Roman period. Gallo-Roman remains have been discovered between le Tertre and Maca, at the foot of the butte de la Grée.
