Derval is a commune in the West of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region.
A little history
Traces of pre-medieval occupation and activity are rare on the territory of the commune, comprising a Gaulish gold stater (perhaps Venetic), an Augustinian aureus, and the potential route of a Roman road at the villages of la Tirardière and la Cochaudais. During the early Middle Ages, populations of Breton origin settled on the territory of Derval and left a trace in the local micro-toponymy. Jean-Yves Le Moing estimates the proportion of place names of Breton origin in the commune at 14.5%. The château de Derval has been known since the 11th century and was during the Middle Ages one of the most powerful fortresses of the Marches de Bretagne.
