A little history
Croix belongs to the historic region of Flandre romane, which changed hands several times from the Middle Ages to the French Revolution. The origins of Croix are not known and the town appears suddenly in history in the Middle Ages, as is the case for several towns in the region (notably Lille and Bruges). The name of the place is cited for the first time in 1066 in the charter of the foundation of the collegiate church of Saint-Pierre in Lille. In this historic document, the Count of Flanders, Baudouin V, grants to the provost of the collegiate church, amongst other things, a manse (or farm) situated in Croix, a muid de bled and les héritages du muid de l'Esparse.
