Cozes, the town
Cozes covers 16.6 km², lies between 10 and 59 m above sea level and had 2,287 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Cozes (pronounced [kɔz]) is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente-Maritime, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine région. Its inhabitants are called the Cozillons and the Cozillonnes. This small town in the Royannais is a hub of commercial and artisanal activity, playing, like many neighbouring towns (Gémozac, Saujon, Meschers), a relay role between the main conurbations of the région (Royan, Saintes, Pons).
A little history
Several discoveries attest to human occupation as far back as Prehistory, including a Neolithic polishing stone at Saint-Cybard, a protohistoric necropolis at Chantegrelet (not far from the hamlet of Javrezac), and the remains of peu-richardiennes fortifications at the lieu-dit La maison rouge (a camp with ditches and chicane gates). Settlement developed during the Gallo-Roman period, with no fewer than ten villæ identified, spread across the entire communal territory. Toponymy allows some of them to be located, with names such as Javrezac or Roumignac being constructed from the possessive suffix -acum, coupled with an anthroponym (the name of their owner, in general).
