A little history
Courtenay belongs to the diocese of Sens and the county of Sens. At the end of the 10th century, the county of Sens faced that of Auxerre. The competition between the two entities, against a backdrop of dynastic change (the election of Hugues Capet in 987) and then the war of succession to the duchy of Bourgogne, led them to erect castles, Château-Renard facing Saint-Fargeau and Saint-Sauveur, and Joigny facing Toucy. According to chronicles written by the monks of the abbey of Saint-Denis, an Atto de Courtenay is said to have been appointed to lead the castle of Château-Renard, without however holding seigneurial rank.
