Courrières is a French commune situated in the département of Pas-de-Calais in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Courriérois. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération Hénin-Carvin.
A little history
In 1002, Anselme Ier, Comte de Lens et de Saint-Pol, had a fortified castle built at Courrières. In the 15th century, Courrières was under the authority of the ducs de Bourgogne. In 1532, Jean de Montmorency, seigneur de Courrières and chamberlain to Charles Quint, knight of the Toison d'Or, governor of the château de la Motte-au-Bois in 1525, had the église Saint-Piat built, of which the bell tower and the left side of the nave survive. Being part of the Pays-Bas espagnols, Courrières was attached to France in 1659 by the traité des Pyrénées.
