Courcôme is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Its inhabitants are known as the Courcômois and the Courcômoises.
A little history
The very ancient settlement is attested by the presence of the dolmens de Magné situated at the lieu-dit la Vieille Garenne and dated to the Neolithic period. According to a charter from around the year 970, cited by abbé Michon, the church and the land of Courcôme are said to have been given by Guillaume Fier-à-bras, duc d'Aquitaine, to the église Saint-Hilaire le Grand de Poitiers. This donation also comprised the villas, the vineyards, the meadows and the mill that overlook the stream known as the Contest (today the Bief). In all likelihood, nothing remains of the original church, except perhaps some foundations. Nothing allows the current church to be dated to before the end of the 11th century.
