Coullons covers 79 km², lies between 130 and 205 m above sea level and had 2,231 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Coullons is a French commune located in the Loiret department in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Beuvron, the Aquiaulne and various other small watercourses. The commune has a remarkable natural heritage made up of one Natura 2000 site and three natural areas of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
Saint Genou is traditionally honoured in Coullons. Between 29 January and 8 February 1939, more than 2,800 Spanish refugees fleeing the collapse of the Spanish republic before the troops of Franco arrived in the Loiret. Faced with the inadequacy of the reception facilities in Orléans, 46 rural reception centres were opened, including one in Coullons. The refugees, essentially women and children (the men were disarmed and held in the south of France), were subjected to strict quarantine, vaccinated, their correspondence was restricted, and provisions, though of limited variety and cooked in the French style, were nonetheless secured.
