Confolens (pronounced [kɔ̃fɔlɑ̃]) is a commune in the Centre-Ouest of France, situated in the département of Charente, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Renowned for its Festival, Confolens is one of the two sous-préfectures of Charente and the most important town in the Charente limousine. The new commune of Confolens was created on 1 January 2016 following the merger of the former commune of Confolens and its neighbour Saint-Germain-de-Confolens. The two merged communes became communes déléguées.
A little history
The region was inhabited as far back as prehistoric times, as attested by numerous megalithic monuments. However, Confolens is not mentioned until the 11th century. Confolens was situated on the old Roman road from Angoulême to Bourges via Argenton, at the point where it crossed the Vienne. The hypothesis of an ancient bridge at the site of the Pont Vieux was put forward following the discovery of remains in the 18th century.
