Renowned for its Festival, Confolens is one of the two sous-préfectures of Charente and the most important town in the Charente limousine. The new commune of Confolens was created on 1 January 2016 following the merger of the former commune of Confolens and its neighbour Saint-Germain-de-Confolens. The two merged communes became communes déléguées.
