Located on the canalised course of the Escaut, it forms part of the suburbs of Valenciennes and of the communauté d'agglomération Valenciennes Métropole, which brings together 35 communes and 191,738 inhabitants, in 2023.
A little history
Situated in Gallia Belgica during the Celtic period, the site was occupied by the Nerviens and then by the Romans, who established a military encampment there. The Franks settled there during the period of the Invasions and the region was evangelised in the 7th century by saint Wasnon, patron of the parish church. A collegiate church was erected in the immediate vicinity (currently the place Verte) and was placed under the dedication of Notre-Dame. The foundation of this chapter, which provided the feudal power with its administrative staff, dates back to the Merovingian period (5th to 8th centuries, as attested by archaeological excavations).
