Clisson is a French commune, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire, between Nantes, Cholet and La Roche-sur-Yon, on the border of Maine-et-Loire and Vendée. With 7,452 inhabitants in 2023, Clisson is at the centre of a conurbation including three neighbouring communes and totalling 18,138 inhabitants in 2014. In the Middle Ages, Clisson was part of the duché de Bretagne, being, along with its château, one of the keystones of the defence of the marches of Bretagne, facing Poitou and Anjou.
A little history
During Antiquity, Clisson was situated in the territory of the Ambiliates, then in that of the Pictons in Aquitaine seconde. The valley of Clisson was part of the former comté d'Herbauges. It was ceded in 942 by the comte de Poitiers, Guillaume Tête d'Étoupe, to the duc Alain Barbetorte. The valley of Clisson took shape during the 12th century around its château, the construction of which began under Guillaume de Clisson, on a rocky spur overlooking the Sèvre, and continued under its successive lords, among them the famous Olivier V de Clisson, connétable de France.
