Claira is a French commune situated in the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the région of Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune is part of the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Agly, the Llavanera, the ruisseau de Claira and by another watercourse.
A little history
The ancient Via Domitia passed to the west of the current village. Paths follow more or less the same route. Around 118 BC, the estate of a certain Clarus (or Clarius) was established on a small rise close to the Via Domitia, forming the original point of the village.
