Chuelles is a French commune in the Gâtinais, situated in the département of Loiret in the Centre-Val de Loire region. Exposed to an altered oceanic climate, it is drained by the Fossé 01 de la commune de Chuelles and various small watercourses. Chuelles is a rural commune with 1,237 inhabitants in 2023, having experienced a sharp rise in population since 1975.
A little history
The prehistoric inhabitants of the commune left at least one megalith as a trace of their occupation, at la Duranterie. See Monuments. Between 29 January and 8 February 1939, more than 2,800 Spanish refugees fleeing the collapse of the Spanish republic before the troops of Franco arrived in the Loiret. Faced with the inadequacy of the reception facilities in Orléans, 46 rural reception centres were opened, including one in Chuelles.
