Cherves-Richemont is a former commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. On 1st January 2024, it merged with Saint-Sulpice-de-Cognac to form the commune of Val-de-Cognac. It benefits from a relatively significant environmental, palaeontological, archaeological and architectural heritage.
A little history
The valley of the Antenne is listed as an archaeological zone in terms of settlement since the Neolithic. Rock shelters and concealed shelters are numerous. However, excavations at the abri de Bois-Roche showed no evidence of human presence, whereas Saint-Césaire, where the Neanderthal woman "Pierrette" was found, is nearby. The presence of a necropolis with circular ditches at la Franchie attests to a protohistoric occupation, and the name of the "ferry" is a sign of metalworking during the Iron Age.
