Chef-Boutonne (commonly referred to as « Chef ») is a French town situated in the département of Deux-Sèvres, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. On 1st January 2019, the town merged with the neighbouring communes of Tillou, Crézières, and La Bataille, with the town of Chef-Boutonne as the central commune. It is the chef-lieu of the Canton de Chef-Boutonne and of the Communauté de communes du Cœur du Poitou, which today forms part of the four communities making up the Communauté de communes Mellois en Poitou as one of the sub-seats, sharing this position with Celles-sur-Belle, Brioux-sur-Boutonne, and Sauzé-entre-Bois.
A little history
Chef-Boutonne is a chef-lieu de canton known for the national renown of two figures, Chrétien Guillaume de Lamoignon de Malesherbes, the ill-fated defender of Louis XVI, and, closer to our own time, Jean-François Cail, who was, in the 19th century, the equivalent of what industrialists such as Dassault or Bouygues represent today. The first left his name to the square created on the ruins of the former feudal château, at the lieu-dit la Plaine, and the second to the main square in the centre of the bourg.
