Chazelles (Chaselas in Limousin, an Occitan dialect) is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). Its inhabitants are called the Chazellois and the Chazelloises.
A little history
Chazelles has been occupied since the Neolithic period, as attested by the remains found in the grottes du Quéroy, which consist of around ten rooms connected by galleries with stalactites of remarkable whiteness. The chemin des Anglais, a medieval road thought to be of Roman origin running from Angoulême to Limoges, passed along the northern boundary of the commune near Saint-Paul. Under the Ancien Régime, the two parishes of Chazelles and Saint-Paul were part of the baronnie de Montbron. The oldest parish registers date back to 1638 for Chazelles, and 1664 for Saint-Paul.
