Châteauneuf-sur-Charente, formerly known as Châteauneuf, is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. A former chef-lieu de canton, it is now the seat of the centralising office of the new canton of Charente-Champagne. Along with Cognac and Jarnac, it is one of the three towns situated at the heart of the Charentais vineyard, and the smallest of the three. Its inhabitants are known as Castelnoviens and Castelnoviennes.
A little history
A prehistoric settlement has been confirmed. The site of Fontaury is associated with Homo sapiens. The grotte à Melon is a Mousterian site. Thanks to aerial archaeology, traces of protohistoric enclosures or ditches have also been found within the commune.
