Châteauneuf-du-Faou [ʃatonœf dy fu] (Kastell-Nevez-ar-Faou in Breton) is a commune in the département of Finistère, in the région of Bretagne, in France. The locality is bathed by the Aulne, an important Breton coastal river. Châteauneuf-du-Faou is traditionally the capital of the Pays Dardoup.
A little history
The name Châteauneuf-du-Faou comes from castrum novum in fago (perhaps meaning "new castle in a beech wood" in Latin). Faou is pronounced fou. The town owes its name to a castle built before 1186, the date at which it was besieged by Guyomarc'h and Hervé de Léon in revolt against Henri II Plantagenêt. Its builder is unknown.
