Châteaubriant ([ʃa.to.bʁi.jɑ̃]) is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region. A sub-prefecture, it is the chief town of the arrondissement of Châteaubriant-Ancenis, and the seat of the communauté de communes Châteaubriant-Derval. It forms part of historic Brittany.
A little history
The region around Châteaubriant contains traces of ancient occupation. Despite the actions of the abbé Cotteux, nicknamed the "grand destructeur de menhirs", who built the calvaire de Louisfert using several of these monoliths as his raw material, menhirs remain in the surroundings of Châteaubriant. They can be found at Rougé, in the village of la Houssais, on the road from Sion-les-Mines to Treffieux, at Lusanger and Saint-Aubin-des-Châteaux. Axes from the polished stone age have also been discovered, notably on the territory of Châteaubriant, at la Borderie, to the north of the former racecourse of Béré.
