Château-Chinon (Ville) (pronounced [ ʃato ʃinɔ̃ vil]), or more commonly Château-Chinon ([ ʃato ʃinɔ̃]), is a French commune situated in the département de la Nièvre, in the région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Considered the capital of the Morvan, it is built on the slopes of a hill rising to 609 m. Given its strategic position, its history has been eventful since the Gaulish and Gallo-Roman periods with the people of the Éduens, through the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime, when it was a châtellenie and then a comté belonging to the greatest families in the kingdom of France.
A little history
Observations and excavations carried out at the summit of the Calvaire, together with the character of the site, suggest the presence of a promontory fort from the protohistoric period and an enclosure. Excavations carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries did indeed lead to the discovery, in addition to objects dating from the Gaulish, Gallo-Roman and medieval periods, of a copper axe, a bronze bracelet and other objects from the Stone Age. The original name of Château-Chinon, no doubt Gaulish, is unknown (see Toponymie), that is to say the name of the Gaulish oppidum established by the people of the Éduens at the summit of the Calvaire.
