A little history
The development of Varennes-Vauzelles was largely determined by its neighbour, the town of Nevers. The latter played a role through its long-established function as a railway junction. As early as the 1860s, a proper station as well as a depot and repair workshops had been built. Thus, Nevers became the first major traction relay for trains heading towards Saint-Germain-des-Fossés, Clermont-Ferrand and Saint-Étienne. The railway vocation of the Nièvre was confirmed and railway workers became the greatest working-class reality in the department.
