Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier is a French commune situated in the département of Nièvre in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are known as the Saint-Pierrois.
A little history
According to Soultrait, in the field of Maltroncé, between Saint-Pierre and Couguy, near the remains of a Roman road, a tumulus was discovered in 1847, built of flat stones, circular in shape, and measuring 9 metres 90 centimetres in diameter by 2 metres in height. It contained five tombs, two of which were small, built of dry stone. The bones were well preserved, with all the heads facing east, along with copper bracelets and objects made of horn. Saint-Pierre-le-Moûtier was the seat of a royal bailliage, established in the 14th century, whose jurisdiction covered, for royal cases, Auvergne, Bourbonnais, Berry and Nivernais. This jurisdiction was subsequently reduced in extent.
