A little history
Around 700, a small market town called Seyr existed, where a sub-deacon named Lioup founded a church dedicated to the Virgin and a monastery subject to the rule of saint Basile. The name La Charité was given later, owing to the charity that the monks showed towards the poor who passed through. The town was destroyed twice by the Gascons, in 743 and in 771. La Charité-sur-Loire developed around a Cluniac priory and two churches erected by the monks in 1059, the whole protected by ramparts.
