It is not certain that the stronghold Noviodunum Aeduorum cited by Caesar, a stronghold of the Eduens, corresponds to Nevers. In this regard, Neuvy-sur-Loire, 80 km away and also in the Nièvre, is often cited instead. The names Nevirnum and Nebernum are also mentioned. The name comes from that of the river Nièvre (Nivara, Nevara).
