Imphy is a French commune, situated in the département de la Nièvre and the région Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are called the Imphycois or the Imphycoises. It is known in particular for its steelworks, renowned for their special steels which were used notably for one of the legs of the tour Eiffel in 1889.
A little history
The site of Imphy was certainly occupied as early as the Palaeolithic period. It appears that a Gaulish tribe lived at the spot where the Ixeure flows into the Loire. In 887 Imphy was called Amfiaco, in 1121 Amphéium, in 1287 Emphiacum, in 1400 Amphy, in 1478 Ymphiacum and in 1491 Ymphi. It was a fief dependent on the châtellenie de Nevers and long united with that of Prye.
