Clamecy is a French commune located in the département of Nièvre, in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Its inhabitants are called the Clamecycois. Clamecy is the birthplace of several notable figures, a Nobel Prize winner in literature, Romain Rolland, a great navigator, Alain Colas, and a ministre du Redressement productif, Arnaud Montebourg.
A little history
The site of Clamecy was probably inhabited as early as the Gallo-Roman period, as attested by several archaeological discoveries. In the 9th or 10th century, the counts of Nevers had a castle built at Clamecy, which stood near the parish church, in front of the current hôtel de ville. In 1213, the count of Nevers Hervé IV granted the Clamecycois their first freedoms. Shortly afterwards, a rampart was built to protect the town.
