Considered the capital of the Morvan, it is built on the slopes of a hill rising to 609 m. Given its strategic position, its history has been eventful since the Gaulish and Gallo-Roman periods with the people of the Éduens, through the Middle Ages and the Ancien Régime, when it was a châtellenie and then a comté belonging to the greatest families in the kingdom of France.
