Champniers (pronounced [ʃɑ̃pnje] or [ʃɑnje]) is a commune in the South-West of France situated in the département of Charente, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. It is situated to the north of the Angoulême conurbation and forms part of its urban area. Its inhabitants are known as the Chaniérauds and the Chaniéraudes.
A little history
The commune was long known for the cultivation of saffron well before the 19th century. There was even a saffron fair every 11th of December. The civil register records date back to 1599. The commune of Champniers, quite extensive, possessed a large number of fiefs, the most important of which were Argence, le Puy de Nelle, le Breuil and Vouillac.
