Chalais is a French commune situated in the département of Charente, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine région. Its inhabitants are called Chalaisiens and Chalaisiennes.
A little history
In the Middle Ages, Chalais was the seat of a seigneury that initially held the title of barony, almost as ancient as that of Barbezieux. It was a vassal of the archbishopric of Bordeaux, and like part of the south-west of Charente, fell under Saintonge. From a religious point of view, Chalais came under the dioceses of Saintes (the town) and Périgueux (Saint-Christophe), with the Tude forming the boundary. The family of the seigneur princes of Chalais was closely related to the viscounts of Castillon.
