Céret (in Catalan, Ceret) is a French commune of approximately 7,500 inhabitants situated in the south of France, historically in Catalogne nord. It is one of the sub-prefectures of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales. Its inhabitants are called the Cérétans and the Cérétanes.
A little history
Several remains bear witness to the passage of diverse populations during prehistory across the territory of the commune. In the surroundings of the Mas Carol stands the Roc de Nou Creus (Roc des neuf croix). This rock, some fifteen metres long and 2.50 metres in height, features numerous crosses carved during the dolmenic period, as well as a few crosses dating from the Middle Ages. Some rocks with cup marks can also be found in the surrounding area.
