Castries, the town
Castries covers 24.1 km², lies between 20 and 154 m above sea level and had 6,883 inhabitants in the 2023 census. Its inhabitants are called the Castriotes.
Castries [kas.tʁi] (in Occitan Càstrias ['kas.trjɔs]) is a French commune situated in the east of the département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Cadoule, the Bérange, the Valentibus and various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage made up of four natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
The site of Castries shows traces of Neolithic and Chalcolithic occupation (arrowheads, flint). From the 1st century onwards, a Roman guard post (castra) was established at the top of the hill to watch over the Roman road (via domitia). A period of obscurity follows until the 10th century, when the name Castra appears in local history collections. The first known lord of the feudal castle was called Dalmace (who came from Catalonia and the Bitérois).
