Carvin covers 21 km², lies between 17 and 42 m above sea level and had 17,909 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Carvin is a French commune situated in the Pas-de-Calais department in the Hauts-de-France region. Its inhabitants are called the Carvinois. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération Hénin-Carvin and of the schéma de cohérence territoriale (SCOT) de Lens-Liévin et d'Hénin-Carvin.
A little history
Significant excavations revealed in 2008 the antiquity of the local settlement, which dates back to the Neolithic period. In the 18th century, against the wishes of the inhabitants, the princes d'Epinoy undertook a forced urbanisation of the northern districts as well as of the area situated in open countryside between Epinoy and the village, which thus saw the creation of the current grand-place. The États d'Artois created a new road which, linking Arras to Lille, brought together the various hamlets in full prosperity. In preparation for the États généraux of 1789, the parish of Carvin-Epinoy drew up cahiers de doléances.
