Carcans (pronounced in French, [kaʁkɑ̃], in Occitan, Carcan) is a commune in the South-West of France, in the département of the Gironde, in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The commune of Carcans is part of the communauté de communes Médoc Atlantique.
A little history
The presence of flint tools, axes, arrowheads and harpoons on the eastern shore of the lake confirms that humans have been present in the commune since prehistoric times. It is perhaps during the Gallo-Roman period that the village of Carcans came into being, as the Romans are said to have taken a great interest in forestry, particularly the maritime pine and oak groves situated on the ancient dunes between Carcans and Lacanau. The first historical record of the commune dates from 1099, the year in which the lord of Lesparre granted to the Benedictine monks of the abbatiale Sainte-Croix de Bordeaux the churches of Carcans, Lacanau and Sainte-Hélène de l'Etang.
