Capestang [ka.pes.tɑ̃] is a French commune situated in the French département of Hérault, in the Occitanie region. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the canal du Midi, the rivière de Quarante, the Mayre Rouge, the ruisseau de Merdols, the ruisseau de Montady and by various other small watercourses. The commune possesses a remarkable natural heritage, a Natura 2000 site (the étang de Capestang) and three natural zones of ecological, faunal and floral interest.
A little history
In Antiquity, the neighbouring marshes were crossed by the Roman Pont Serme, 1,500 metres long. The bridge carried the Via Domitia on its approach to Narbonne during its strategic journey southwards towards Spain. The name of the town derives from caput stagnum, in reference to the fact that the town was situated at the head of a large étang. The archbishops of Narbonne built their summer residence in the town. Significant remains survive, notably of the palace with a 15th-century ceiling. The town also contains an impressive collégiale (12th to 15th centuries with earlier remains) whose massive tower dominates the surrounding countryside to this day.
