Canohès [kano.ɛs] is a French commune situated in the east of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the commune is part of the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Basse, el Correc, l'Adou and by another watercourse.
A little history
A few pieces of pottery and a polished axe found at the Camp del Roure bear witness to the occupation of the territory during the Neolithic period. Other pieces of pottery and fragments of walls near the church, as well as fragments of amphorae near the Mas de les Coves, prove occupation during the Roman period. Six archaeological sites are listed on the territory, none of which has so far been explored. However, during works for the passage of the TGV, a Visigothic site uncovered at Manrèse was excavated before being destroyed.
