Cambrai (prononcé) is a French commune, historically the capital of the Cambrésis, situated in the département du Nord, of which it is today one of the sub-prefectures, in the Hauts-de-France region. Cambrai is a medium-sized town with 31,134 inhabitants at the 2023 census. It lies at the heart of the unité urbaine de Cambrai which, with 45,511 inhabitants (2023), places it 7th in the departmental rankings. Its aire d'attraction, which is more extensive, brings together 92,785 inhabitants (2023).
A little history
Under the High Roman Empire, Camaracum, or Cameracum, was no more than a rural settlement (vicus) of the cité des Nerviens (Cameracum Nerviorum), whose capital was Bavay (Bagacum). In the middle of the 4th century, the advance of the Franks southwards threatening Bavay, the chief town of the cité des Nerviens was moved towards the beginning of the 5th century to Cambrai. In 430, led by King Clodion le Chevelu, the Salian Franks seized the town. In 509, Clovis attached it to his Frankish kingdom.
