Cabestany (prononcé ou en français, en catalan) is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. Historically and culturally, the commune is part of the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Fosseille and by another watercourse.
A little history
Following a request in 1762 by the inhabitants of Cabestany, a perpetual curate was assigned to the parish. Responsibility for representation lay with the Order of Malta at that time. On 3 September 1793, during the guerre du Roussillon, the combat de Cabestany took place, in which 400 infantry soldiers and 400 cavalry of the Spanish general Antonio Ricardos massacred the soldiers of the Republic and part of the population. Part of the commune of Cabestany was detached on 19 July 1923 to form the new commune of Saleilles.
