Bruay-sur-l'Escaut [bʁyɛ syʁ lɛsko] is a French commune situated in the département du Nord, in the Hauts-de-France region. The commune is a member of the communauté d'agglomération Valenciennes Métropole.
A little history
Bruay has its origins in a Merovingian villa which became, at the beginning of the 8th century, the property of Pharaïlde, from a noble family of Brabant. She was proclaimed a saint shortly after her death and the Church ratified her cult. Accounts speak of a basilicula sanctae Pharaïldis destroyed by the Normans during the invasion of 879 to 883. The first document mentioning a parish dates from 1206.
