A little history
Neanderthal man occupied the region, near Arras, 200,000 years ago. From 10,000 BC, occupation by modern man around Béthune is attested by various discoveries. Several Roman-era remains have been uncovered since the 19th century, including two cremation cemeteries, wells, foundations, amphorae and ceramic furnishings.
