Brie, the town

Brie covers 34.1 km², lies between 67 and 167 m above sea level and had 4,125 inhabitants in the 2023 census.

Brie, formerly known as Brie-la-Rochefoucauld, is a commune in the South-West of France, situated in the département of Charente (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region). It is part of the Grand Angoulême. Its inhabitants are known as the Briauds and the Briaudes.

A little history

The civil registration records date back to 1665. The family de Nesmond, an illustrious family of the Angoumois, resided in the commune for a long time and owned two logis, at the bourg and at la Jauvigère. In the 19th century, the war administration established the shooting range (known at the time as the polygone de tir) in the forest of la Braconne, over nearly two lieues. It was supplied with drinking water by means of a pipe bringing water from the springs of la Touvre.
