A little history
In 596 the ruling of saint Aunaire, 18th bishop of Auxerre (572–605), included Briare among the thirty principal parishes of the diocese. The town developed under Henri IV thanks to the construction of the canal de Loyre en Seyne, which would become the canal de Briare. This canal, built in the 17th century, connects the Loire to the Seine. Between 29 January and 8 February 1939, more than 2,800 Spanish refugees fleeing the collapse of the Spanish republic before the troops of Franco arrived in the Loiret.
