A little history
Bourbourg appeared on land partly formed from alluvium descending from the upper part of the basin of the Aa. Around 800, according to a map by Malbrancq which depicts the eastern part of the delta of the Aa, the village Burgus in broco is indicated, surrounded by Ecclesia in broco (Brouckerque), Grunberga (Bergues), Saint-Wilbrordi (Gravelines), Koudekerke (Coudekerque), Spikere (Spycker) and Loo berga (Looberghe). The Normans devastated the town around 880. The Count of Flanders Baudouin II (Baudouin le Chauve) surrounded the rebuilt town with ramparts and ditches around 900.
