Bouguenais is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région of Pays de la Loire. The commune is part of historic Brittany, within the traditional pays of Pays de Retz and the historic pays of Pays nantais. Its inhabitants, the Bouguenaisiens, numbered 20,530 at the 2023 census, according to INSEE.
A little history
It is estimated that the Gallo-Roman town of Ratiatum extended across the hillside, which was then situated on the banks of the Loire, from the present-day village of Rezé as far as les Couëts. A number of ancient objects were found near les Couëts, at a spot thought to have been the site of a medical sanctuary. A feudal motte was also built in the 11th century close to the commune. The earliest written mentions of the village of Bouguenais date back to the 9th century.
