Boucau (formerly Le Boucau) is a French commune situated in the département of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the région of Nouvelle-Aquitaine. The inhabitants are known as Boucalais (or bocalés in Gascon, and bokales in Basque).
A little history
It was in 1578 that the Adour, whose mouth was then located further north at Vieux-Boucau, was diverted to flow into a district of the town of Tarnos (Landes), le Boucau. In 1562, the town of Bayonne, then in decline, obtained permission from Charles IX of France to be given direct access to the ocean. It was Louis de Foix who carried out the breakthrough towards the ocean into which the river poured on 25 October 1578. The port traffic then provided a living for pilots guiding ships and a number of dockers. Boucau formed part of the barony of Seignanx.
