Bouaye ([bwɛ] ou [bwɛj]) is a commune in the West of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the région Pays de la Loire. The commune, chief town of the former Canton de Bouaye (dissolved in 2014), forms part of historic Brittany, within the traditional pays of pays de Retz and the historic pays of Pays nantais. Its inhabitants are called les Boscéens and les Boscéennes.
A little history
Until the Second World War, Bouaye was an essentially rural commune. The technical advances of the 19th century and the development of road and rail infrastructure would favour the slow transformation of the commune. Human settlement on the territory of the commune, linked to the proximity of the lac de Grand-lieu, is attested from prehistoric times. In the 7th century, Saint-Hermeland came to evangelise the population.
