Bompas, the town
Bompas covers 5.7 km², lies between 9 and 20 m above sea level and had 7,832 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Bompas is a French commune situated in the north-east of the département of Pyrénées-Orientales, in the Occitanie region. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune lies within the Roussillon, a former province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and which covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Têt and by two other watercourses.
A little history
The Voie Domitienne crossed the territory of the commune in Antiquity. The sole testimony of this period, a hoard of Gaulish and Roman coins was discovered in 1910 near the former path known as the chemin de Charlemagne, comprising 650 coins of the Volques Tectosages as well as 13 consular denarii dating from 139 to 74 BC. In the 12th century, there existed a family of lords of Malpas, before the count of Roussillon Girard II bequeathed the lordship to the militia of the Temple in 1172.
