Blain, the town
Blain covers 101.7 km², lies between 7 and 44 m above sea level and had 10,376 inhabitants in the 2023 census.
Blain is a commune in the west of France, situated in the département of Loire-Atlantique, in the Pays de la Loire region, approximately 35 km north of Nantes and not far from the route nationale 137 linking Nantes to Rennes, part of the route des Estuaires. Chef-lieu de canton since 1790 and of the district from 1790 to 1795, the town of Blain grew from a very ancient settlement, attested from the time of the Roman Empire within the Gallo-Roman civitas of the Namnètes.
A little history
Blain was a former Gallo-Roman economic centre of the civitas of the Namnètes, renowned for its numerous Gallo-Roman remains scattered across more than 60 hectares, whose vitality came to a halt with the disintegration of the Roman Empire. The Gallo-Roman settlement appears to have been bounded by three necropolises and takes the form of a roadside vicus driven by significant craft activity. Blain stood at the crossroads of several routes, including the Roman road from Nantes to Vannes via Redon (the present-day RD 164), a road coming from Nort-sur-Erdre and Ancenis, and a road heading towards Rennes via Pont-Veix on the Don, with a branch towards Châteaubriant at Pont-Veix.
